Jajangmyeon is one of Korea’s most beloved comfort foods. It consists of thick wheat noodles topped with a rich, savory black bean sauce made from fermented soybean paste (chunjang), diced pork, onions, and sometimes seafood or vegetables.
The sauce is stir-fried with oil to deepen its flavor, then simmered into a glossy, slightly sweet and salty mixture that coats the noodles perfectly. It is typically served with pickled radish (danmuji) and raw onions on the side for a refreshing contrast.
Originally adapted from Chinese cuisine, jajangmyeon has become a uniquely Korean dish and is especially popular for quick meals, takeout, and celebrations—most famously eaten on “Black Day” (April 14) by singles in Korea.
